Peter Prahl's Recension av Mama - en rysligt bra debut av Andres Muschietti

A scary ghost story that on several occasions gives you shivers down the spine. Mama is based on the short film from 2008 with the same name and is also Andres Muschiettis feature film directorial debut. It is about two young sisters who have grown up in the wilderness. As the only help and companionship, they have a mysterious presence known only as "Mama".

When the financial crisis affecting the world 2008 Jeffrey loses grip completely and murdering both his business partner and his wife. Then he kidnaps the children and go away with them in the car. Jeffrey drive recklessly over an embankment and crashing the car into the woods. He and the kids end up in a creepy cabin where an unknown and unseen presence prevents him from murdering the rest of his family by suddenly and brutally kill him. Five years later find Jeffrey's twin brother of the girls who still live in the cottage, seemingly alone. He brings with him the now feral sisters to his home, but have no idea that the invisible presence girls feel like Mama soon after to retrieve them.

While the children are struggling to get used to a normal life at home starts mysterious events to blight the lives, and a battle of the sisters taking off that threatens to choke the whole family. The terrible truth about Mama's past are revealed more and more as she does everything to regain their children.

The film's executive producer is the famous director Guillermo del Toro, and his support for debut director Muschetti should say something about how good the film is visually. In a manner similar to del Toro, shows Muschietti an impressive sense of drama with his film photographic style, which is particularly promising given that the film is his directorial debut.

With an emphasis on composition and smart mowing are the special effects invisibly incorporated, creating a genuinely frightening effect. With a strong ensemble of actors, especially the young actresses who play sisters, Mama is an eerie experience playing with old ideas in a new and creative way. Mama is a scary story that makes the heart is constantly going up in his throat, which is why the film is excellently suited for deliciously dark midnight showings.
